Rachel’s Story
Rachel was seven months pregnant and living in her car in winter weather in northern New Mexico. The father of her child was in long-term substance treatment in another state, and Rachel had no other family.
When she called Self Help, and the staff asked her how they could help, she said, “I need just about everything.” Through a network of United Way of northern New Mexico agencies and churches, Rachel was able to move in to an apartment. Self Help, Inc. assisted her in finding the initial funding for an apartment and provided a job search and resume assistance.
Rachel was able to obtain full time work. By the time the baby was born, she had health insurance, child care assistance and resources for food.
She gained the confidence to thrive, not just to survive.
